Remembered best for his role as the shooter in the Academy Award-nominated film Boyz n the Hood, Avery is also known for his performances in Poetic Justice and Doogie Howser, M.D., as well as for his starring role in the 2000 movie Lockdown.

He began his film acting career in the early 1990s and was active in Hollywood until 2001.

He was convicted of homicide in the early 2000s and was murdered in his prison cell in late 2005.
