Tatjana Patitz is one of a select group of famous supermodels who appeared on George Michael’s song “Freedom! ” and graced magazine covers in the 1980s and 1990s.
Corinne Nicolas, Patitz’s New York agent at the Model CoOp agency, confirmed that she had passed away in Santa Barbara, California. Nicolas stated illness as the cause but provided no additional details.
Patitz, who was born in Germany, spent her childhood in Sweden, and later settled in California, was one of a select group of “original” supermodels. She appeared alongside Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, and Cindy Crawford in the Michael video. She was a favorite of fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh, who showcased her natural beauty in his well-known photograph from 1988 titled “White Shirts: Six Supermodels, Malibu” and for the cover of British Vogue in 1990; Vogue reports that Michael used the group in his lip-syncing video.
Anna Wintour, the magazine’s global editorial director, was quoted as saying that Patitz was “always the European symbol of chic, like Romy Schneider-meets-Monica Vitti,” according to the publication. She was much more mysterious, mature, and difficult to approach than her peers, and that made her attractive.
